My companions and I ordered Artichoke Dip as an appetizer. This was awesome! The artichoke hearts were blended with a mix of cheeses and herbs and served with several fried flatbread wedges.

Supreme Pizza on wheat crust:

This is the pizza that I ate. The crust was traditional hand-tossed, and was somewhat soft instead of chewy or crispy. The sauce was mild but the ingredients were fresh and it had a decent amount of cheese. The slices were big and filling!

Overall Impression: Decent pizza, but nothing fancy. Our server was great about getting drinks refilled, etc.

Hello,

It is not often that I reveal anything about myself or my personal life on this blog, other than the foods I like to eat At this time, however, I have a personal request for those of you in the restaurant business and affiliates who read this blog (and any other generous people who may be reading)

Two months ago my best friend’s baby boy, Jake, was diagnosed with a rare genetic eye disorder called Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy (FEVR).
With this diagnosis it was discovered that Jake has only “light” sight
and minimal peripheral vision. On July 16th and 17th, Jake underwent
double eye surgery to reattach his retinas and remove fluid blockage
with the hopes of allowing him the chance to see, at least, shapes and
shadows. It will be another 4-6 months before they will know if the
surgery was successful. What is known, is that Jake will need extensive
eye therapy, glasses and most likely multiple surgeries throughout his
life. FEVR is a progressive disorder with no known cure. The only thing
that can be certain is that Jake will be fighting for sight for the
rest of his life.

Because of all the therapy and ongoing care that Baby Jake needs, his mother (my friend) is unable to return to work. As you can imagine, this has caused a great financial burden on the family. To help alleviate some of the costs of therapy and the loss of income, a small group of friends and I are hosting a Benefit on Friday, September 18th to raise money for Jake and his family. The benefit will include the following:

Silent Auction

Raffle

Live Bands

Freedom Station

Arena

Bad Apple

Chili Feed

Bake Sale (Click here to donate bake sale items)

Cash Bar

The benefit is open to anyone who would like to come and support our cause. You can find specific details of the event on Jake’s Benefit Website, Our Visions of Hope. At this time I am looking for restaurant donations to include in the raffle drawing. If you are in the restaurant business and would be able to donate Gift Cards (or make a monetary donation to Jake) please e-mail me at kristi@twincitiesrestaurantblog.com.

Thanks for your support!!!!!

I started with the homemade chips and salsa and a house margarita. The chips were thin, hot and fresh and the salsa was decent. The margarita was pretty good too. I visited during happy hour but was disappointed to hear that you can only get happy hour specials on the appetizers if you order them at the bar, not sitting down in the restaurant.

Pappasito’s Menu can be found here.

Wednesday nights are 1/2 priced fajitas night, so my companion and I decided to order the combo steak & chicken fajitas for two. This is normally $36, so we got it for $18. I have to say, I was kind of disappointed with the fajitas. The food was brought to our table about 5 minutes after we ordered and the meats were slightly undercooked (that’s okay with steak, but not chicken!). Meats were served on a bed of sauteed onions, but there were no sauteed peppers to be found with these fajitas. A generous portion of guacamole and pico de gallo came with the order, and a basket with four flour tortillas. There was plenty of meat for the two of us, but I would never have paid full-price for the amount we got. We had to ask for more tortillas.

We each got a side of rice & beans, both were pretty good.

Overall Impression: Our server was not very friendly or helpful with ordering and the food was decent but overpriced. There are plenty of better Tex-Mex restaurants around Austin that I would go to before going back to Pappasitos.

I was in the mood for a sandwich and was only willing to eat at restaurants that are not found in MN, so when I happened to drive by Firehouse Subs I thought it would be the perfect place. I was even more excited to see that they had a toasted sub with corned beef and pastrami (my favorites!) Unfortunately the sub did not live up to my expectations. I took my sandwich to-go and maybe it was the 10 min delay that made my sandwich taste kind of soggy like it had been warmed in the microwave instead of an oven, but it was not toasty or crunchy at all. The meat was decent but not as good as what I can buy at my local supermarket deli, which was quite disappointing.

Overall Impression: Kind of a let-down on the sandwich front. Maybe sandwiches are better when you eat them at the restaurant rather than to-go??

I had been asking around about good pizza and several sources suggested Mangia Pizza. They have really great happy hour specials so I started with garlic cheese bread (under $3). The pizza I had was a solo Mangia Mia (stuffed with pepperoni, mushroom, green pepper, onion, garlic) with a wheat crust. I thought the pizza was pretty good, but it wasn’t the best Chicago-style pizza I have had. The service was really great though.

Here is a glimpse of the Buffets Islands (I think there were 6-8 of them).

In the way back of the Buffet Islands there is an additional area set up for the Mongolian Stir-Fry. You can choose your own ingredients and then you have the chef ccok it for you on the Mongolian BBQ.

Menu: The items on the buffet change frequently, but there are over 100 items, including a decent selection of Chinese foods, Sushi, American foods, Seafood, and build-your-own Mongolian Stir-Fry. There is also a dessert and fruits table, and salad bar.

There is also a full Chinese Take-Out menu available.
Price guide:

Lunch Buffet Kids 3-6 $4.25 Kids 7-11 $5.50 Adults $8.25

Dinner Buffet Kids 3-6 $5.75 Kids 7-11 $7.25 Adults $12.50

What I ordered: There were many food items at Atlantic Buffet and I was determined to try a little of this and a little of that. Here is my Chinese/Sushi plate. The cheesy mushrooms were very good, as were the steamed dumplings and cream cheese wontons. The few bites I tried of the chicken & Broccoli stir-fry were okay, but I did not care for the other meat entree I tried (not sure what it was but the meat was stringy and chewy). The sushi was decent although there wasn’t a large variety to choose from, mostly California Rolls or Salmon/Avocado Rolls.

I made my own Mongolian stir-fry which was my most favorite dish at the Atlantic Buffet. I chose the ingredients I wanted at the Mongolian BBQ station (Beef, Broccoli, Pineapple, Onions and Noodles) and figured out my own combination of sauces (there was no guide to help!) which included cooking wine, teriyaki, garlic, chile peppers, and sesame seeds. I have found that the more sauce you put on, the better it tastes because the noodles and vegetables soak it right up.

I tried just a few items on my Seafood Plate, including tiny mussels (pretty good, not too chewy or rubbery) that were cooked in a fish sauce. The salmon was okay and I also tried a bite of Halibut.

For the sake of this review I also made a Dessert Plate. Nothing too exciting here but the rice krispie bar and almond cookies were good. They also have soft-serve ice cream.

Service: We were greeted upon entering and were shown to a table right away. Drinks were fast and continuous throughout our visit, as was the clearing of plates.
Overall Impression: Wide variety and selection of foods for the price. The Mongolian BBQ and Seafood Buffet offered the best choices, but I thought the quality of the the Chinese food was just mediocre.
